Definition of Tae Kwon Do

Tae Kwon Do is the ancient Korean art of unarmed combat passed down for many centuries from masters to devoted students. Tae means to smash or kick with the foot. Kwon means to punch or attack with the hand. Do means art or way. Literally translated Tae Kwon Do is the art of hand and foot fighting.

Membership Oath (Chung Do Kwan)

  • We, as members, train our spirits and bodies according to the strict code.
  • We, as members, are united in mutual friendship.
  • We, as members, will comply with regulations and obey instructors.

The Tenants of Tae Kwon Do

  1. Courtesy
    • To promote the spirit of mutual concessions
    • To be ashamed of ones vice, contempting that of others
    • To be polite of one another
    • To encourage the sense of justice
    • To distinguish the instructor from student and senior from junior
  2. Integrity
    • The instructor must be true to our art in word and deed
    • Students must not fix breaking materials for demonstrations
    • The instructor cannot hide bad technique with false praise
    • Students cannot ask for or buy rank
    • Students shouldn't gain rank for ego or power
    • The instructor can't teach his art for materialistic gain
  3. Perseverance - "Patience leads to Virtue or Merit". To achieve something one must set his goal and constantly strive to that end. Don't be a Quitter.
  4. Self Control - The student must always be in control of his mind and body. In class he has a responsibility to his fellow student to never lose his temper or control. In life he must be an example of our art.
  5. Indomitable Spirit - To be a Champion you can never afford to quit. Being behind in anything means only that you must try harder. Tae Kwon Do students never quit.

Children's Home Rules

  1. Children shall greet their parents when they enter and leave the house and tell them goodbye when they leave.
  2. Children will at all times be respectful to their parents and grandparents.
  3. Children will at times be truthful.
  4. Children will strive for a good relationship with their brothers and sisters.
  5. Children will willingly help with household chores.
  6. Children shall report to their parents that they have completed assigned tasks.
  7. Children shall be responsible for the upkeep and neatness of their own room.
  8. Children will practice daily cleanliness in the matter of hair, teeth and body.
  9. Children shall abide by their parent decision.
  10. Children shall not interrupt adult conversations.
  11. Children shall refrain from rowdy behavior at home.
  12. children shall possess an active mind, body and spirit.
  13. Children will diligently study their schoolwork both at school and at home.
  14. Children will at times show respect for their School - teachers and their peers.

Rules and Regulations

  1. Je Jas who enters or leaves the Do Chang will acknowledge with a Kyong-Yet (bow).
  2. At no time will any Je Ja (student) enter the Do Chang (Training Hall) with shoes on.
  3. Je Jas late for class will ask permission of the instructor to enter class.
  4. Never question (contradict) the work of your instructor.
  5. No jewelry or chewing gum will be allowed in class.
  6. Talk on the floor only when asking a question of the instructor.
  7. During the class period there will be no talking or laughter.
  8. No profanity will be allowed in the Do Chang.
  9. No Je Jas are permitted to smoke in the Do Chang. If Je Jas must eat, drink, or smoke with the Do Bok (Karate uniform) on, the belt must be removed and placed around the neck.
  10. When entering the office, knock, Kyong Yet (bow) and enter.
  11. The master instructor will be addressed as Sah Bum Nim (5th degree black belt holder).
  12. Never smoke in the presence of the Sah Bum Nim (instructor).
  13. Black belt holders will be addressed as Yu Dan Ja (black belt degree holder).
  14. Je Jas will address each other as Mr. Mrs. or Miss (Ms.).
  15. Whenever the Sah Bum Nim is holding class, no Je Jas will approach him directly. Approach the senior belt holder and ask his/her permission first.
  16. Show respect and love between senior and junior ranks.
  17. You will conduct yourself outside class as a lady or gentleman and a true Tae Kwon Do (karate) representative at all times.
  18. Tae Kwon Do, or any other form of self-defense will be used only as a means of self-defense, to protect yourself, your family, and the weak.
  19. Failure to comply with the above can result in:
    Dismissal from class; a period of probation; a loss of grade and suspension from all activities; dismissal from the H.K. KIM'S BLACK BELT ACADEMY and all affiliates.
